The Ecstatic Black Body

It is sometimes advantageous to be unseen, although it is most often rather wearing on the nerves. - Ralph Ellison

The Ecstatic Black Body is a video installation that seeks to liberate the black body from the fundamental and or purist thought that sex is sinful, sex exists as a marital right and sex is a male heterosexual dominion. A fact, that rings doubly true when it comes to the external and internal societal bias against black skin and black sexuality. By shifting the focus towards a more sacred understanding of sexual pleasure as a spiritual right, the Ecstatic Black Body seeks to serve as a tool for discrediting disturbing and destabilizing imagery surrounding the black body, black sexuality and gender.

People are trapped in history, and history is trapped in them. - James Baldwin

Made-up of twenty videos that can be viewed as a whole or individually, the Ecstatic Black Body deconstructs black pornographic imagery allowing the viewer to shift their focus away from the act itself and instead examine the erotic movement of the body during the ritual of intercourse---how it behaves, gestures, contorts, bends and twists often times symbolically revealing hidden sacred symbols and patterns associated with ancient African and Moorish designs; Which in turn helps to create a more realistic, positive and stigma less intersection towards sexual equality and gender acceptance amongst ourselves.
